6x6 Era

Mercedes-Benz-G63-AMG-6x6

Mercedes G Wagons have been around since 1979 and despite the time of close to 4 decades they have always been kool & famous, In 2013 Mercedes Benz launched a 6 wheeler truck which was based on G Wagon extended chassis and thus 6x6 variant of G Wagon was launched. G6x6 was offered with a price tag a little over £400,000/- and the truck was promising and the most bad ass truck ever offered by Mercedes, just to give you an idea of how big G6x6 is here's a comparison of G6x6 standing next to a regular G Wagon

That is pretty bad ass. Unfortunately today we live in a time where environment friendly cars are preferred everywhere which are fuel efficient as well as easy to maintain. Despite G6x6 offering everything it didn't offer the "practicality" of eco boxes which is why this year Mercedes Benz had to discontinue the production of G6x6.

On the other hand; Kahn Designs presented another 6x6 at Geneva Motor Show earlier this month. It was none other than the natural enemy of Mercedes G Wagon, a Land Rover Defender 110 extended to 6x6 variant. Defenders have been around for a very long time but the current shape of Defender has been in production since 1983 and unlike Mercedes G Wagon, defender has not been labeled as kool but its more of a work horse. Kahn Designs offered many models based on Defender series and the name given to them is Flying Huntsman Family.

Officially labeled a “Flying Huntsman 110 WB 6x6”, the vehicle is powered by a 6.2-liter LS3 V-8 sourced from General Motors Company [NYSE:GM] and tuned to deliver 430 horsepower. The engine is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission and powers all six wheels thanks to a number of drivetrain upgrades including multiple locking differentials.

To fit the mechanical package, the basic Defender silhouette needed to be lengthened by 1,200 millimeters and widened by 150 mm. The windscreen rake has been increased, and the rear door widened along with the front doors increased length to allow improved entry and egress. A full panoramic roof extends from the B pillars to the rear of the cabin. Brake and suspension upgrades, plus a high-low drive system, complete the engineering overhaul.

There’s no word on pricing but a hefty premium over the 105 Longnose’s 125,000 (approximately $192,000) starting price is expected. From there, A. Kahn Design offers up an almost infinite list of options including armor protection up to the B7 standard.

Looking at how the fate of Mercedes G6x6 turned out; I don't have a lot of high hopes with Flying Huntsman 110 WB 6x6 but then again, its price is way lower than that of Mercedes G6x6 and price does matter a lot when deciding the fate of a car, so lets see how it turns out if & when it comes in production.
