Suzuki Margalla

Suzuki Margalla is a name that always brings a smile on my face;I grew up in the nineties and at time Suzuki Margalla had the same status that Suzuki Swift does today; it was among the coolest cars. A lot of men fantasized about that car. Reason was simple, if you drove a Margalla then you were considered cool which is mostly because of the fact that its counterpart in India known as Maruti 1000 (later known as Maruti Esteem) which used to be shown in Indian movies as a car of successful people.

Internationally this car was available as Suzuki Swift Sedan or Suzuki Cultus Sedan and the production started in 1988. Initially it was offered in 1.0 liter 3 cylinder engine and later was also offered with a 1.3 liter 4 cylinder engine. In some part of the world it also came with a 1.6 liter 4 cylinder engine. The production of this car stopped worldwide in 2003 however we in Pakistan still get the hatchback version of this car known as Suzuki Cultus.

Suzuki Margalla's production started in Pakistan in 1991 and at that time it was offered by the 1.0 liter 3 cylinder engine which was later replaced by the 1.3 liter 4 cylinder engine. Initially Margalla had two variants one was with Air Conditioner (GL) while other was without Air Conditioner (GA). Later in 1995 Margalla GLX was launched and to the best of my knowledge first time term "Power Pack" was marketed in Pakistan.

Margalla GLX aka Margalla Power Pack was the flagship model of Suzuki with the car having 1.3 liter 4 cylinder and Power Steering; Power Windows; Remote Door Mirrors etc. It was only available in black color since black is considered the color of Luxury while the other variants of Margalla were not offered in Black Color. Later in 1996 another color Ash Grey was added to the GLX line and that too was not available in other variants of Margalla

Margalla also faced a face lift during its time which was in August 1997 and the car was re-branded as Margalla Plus. It was launched on the 50th Independence Anniversary of Pakistan and the facelift received a different dashboard (which was later continued in Cultus), Red colored factory fitted garnish & redesigned bumpers. With the Launch of Margalla Plus Ash Grey color was also made available to the Non GLX variants of Margalla.

Margalla's production was discontinued in Pakistan in the second quarter 1998 and later it was replaced by Suzuki Baleno in August 1998. Between the period of 1991 to 1998 Margalla was available in the choice of White, Red, Grey, Green, Blue, Black & Ash Grey colors.
